ISSN international standard serial publication number (ISSN) is an international standard serial publication number developed according to the international standard ISO3297.

 

ISSN international standard serial publication number (ISSN) is an international standard serial publication number developed according to the international standard ISO3297. Its purpose is to make every serial publication of different titles and different editions in the world have an international unique code identification.

The number is prefixed by ISSN and consists of 8 digits. The 8-digit number is divided into two 4-digit segments connected by connecting numbers. The first seven bits are the sequence number and the last is the check bit. ISSN is managed by the ISDS Center in Paris, France. The world standard bibliographic database of continuous publications was established in 1975. Currently, 650,000 periodicals published in nearly 200 countries and regions (including discontinued journals) have been stored in the database, which is called the most authoritative periodical bibliographic data network system in the world.

ISSN bar code can be said to be the id card of journals, when the issue of a new journal magazine, to re apply, and books code, in order to do with EAN-13 commodity bar code, international ISSN headquarters also imported 13 code ISSN bar code, we call it ISN-13 bar code.

The barcode of the journal is composed of the main code (EAN13-bit code) and the 2-bit extra code, which is used to identify the issue date and publication time of the journal. For example, the additional number of each monthly issue is 01,02,.... 12. Therefore, the journal issued several issues each year, should apply for several bar codes, if the journal has no supplement and ISSN number changes, bar codes can be reused. That is, the first phase of the barcode, the first phase can still be used, do not need to apply for a new code.

All periodicals in the world as long as the bar code application, the first three digits are 977. Two special digits (sequential changes) are usually represented by "00". It can be used in two ways, one to indicate changes in the price of the same publication, and the other to identify different daily issues within a week.
